1) Working on a team is crucial

The success of an event or project make up artists work on relies on the combined skill-sets of the team. At times, there can be upwards of 8-10 people working together on a photo shoot or wedding morning.

2) A desire to learn new things and stay up-to-date with the latest trends in the makeup industry.
The industry is always changing so it's important to stay current. Always develop your skills, be aware of the trends and industry changes and always invest in the development of your own artistry. Don't become stagnant, keep passionate about the industry and experiment with products and techniques. The industry changes so quickly that even the most seasoned make up artists have to stay on their toes and be willing to learn new things in order to stay relevant and employable.

3) You should have a strong passion for the industry

Make Up artistry can be fun and also at times hard work. If you are passionate about make-up and enjoy your work you will thrive in the industry.

4) You should have good time management skills.

Really important! Having a strong professional reliable reputation will keep clients booking you and get you further recommendations.

5) You should be able to work on your own and follow instructions well.

In order to be a successful makeup artist, you should be able to work well on your own and work on projects with other people. This means that you have the ability to follow deadlines and can handle feedback from clients or production teams.

6) You should be creative

Creativity is the number one trait that sets a makeup artist apart from the rest. It can be difficult to come up with new creative ideas, especially when you have to think outside of the box and come up with something unique. However, there are ways to boost your creativity using apps like Pinterest or Instagram to follow makeup trends and training can develop your creativity and boost your knowledge.

7) You should understand basic skin care prep, techniques, and procedures for a wide range of skin types and different looks and styles of makeup application.

There are many techniques and procedures to achieve different looks with makeup. It's important to know which tools, products, and techniques work best on the clients skin type or the look you want to achieve.

8) Be confident in your abilities because it is important for you to believe in yourself

It's important that an artist has a varied skill set to be able to achieve employability, especially when starting out and gaining a foot in the industry. Having the skills and training for jobs will lead you to feeling confident to go into make-up artistry career paths feeling confident and able to provide a service that will get you recommended for more work which will lead to a successful make-up artist career.
